† MARCH 24 - SAINT GABRIEL ARCHANGEL
The messenger of the incarnation and redemption

[LA EN] Saint Gabriel Archangel, one of the seven glorious spirits who stand before the throne of God, is revered in the Sacred Scriptures as the supreme messenger of the divine mysteries, being a pure spirit, created in eternity and without a year of earthly death. His very name, which means "Fortress of God", reveals the magnitude of his mission in the history of salvation, charged with announcing the greatest and most sublime interventions of the Lord in humanity. In the Old Testament, it was he who revealed to the prophet Daniel the exact time of the coming of the Messiah and the destinies of the chosen people, opening the veil over the redemptive plan. In the New Testament, he was the bearer of the good news that transformed the cosmos: he announced to the priest Zechariah the birth of Saint John the Baptist, the Precursor, and culminated his vocation by being sent to the Virgin Mary, in Nazareth, to declare the Incarnation of the Word. Through his profound union with the mystery of Christ, Saint Gabriel teaches the faithful readiness in obedience to the divine will and reverence before the impenetrable mystery of the love of God who became flesh to save us.

🎶 Introito (Sl 102, 20)

Benedícite Dóminum, omnes Angeli ejus: poténtes virtúte, qui fácitis verbum ejus, ad audiendam vocem sermónum ejus. Ps. ibid., 1 Bénedic, ánima mea, Dómino: et ómnia quæ intra me sunt, nómini sancto ejus. Glória Patri.

Bless the Lord, all his angels: you who are powerful in virtue, who execute his word, obeying the voice of his precepts. Ps 102, 1 Bless, O my soul, the Lord: and all that is within me bless his holy name. Glory to the Father.

📜 Leitura (Dn 9, 21-26)

In those days: Behold the man Gabriel, whom I had seen at the beginning in a vision, came flying swiftly and touched me at the time of the evening sacrifice. And he instructed me, spoke with me and said: «Daniel, I have now come forth to teach you and make you understand. From the beginning of your prayers the word went forth, and I have come to announce it to you, because you are a man of desires. Therefore, pay attention to the word and understand the vision. Seventy weeks have been shortened upon your people and upon your holy city, that transgression may be consummated, and sin may have an end, and iniquity may be wiped away, and everlasting justice may come, and vision and prophecy may be fulfilled, and the Saint of saints may be anointed. Know therefore and understand: From the going forth of the word to rebuild Jerusalem again until Christ the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; and the square and the walls shall be rebuilt in times of anguish. And after the sixty-two weeks Christ shall be slain, and the people who will deny him shall not be his. And the city and the sanctuary shall be destroyed by the people with the prince who is to come; and its end shall be desolation, and after the end of the war, the determined desolation.»

📖 Evangelho (Lc 1, 26-38)

At that time: The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel, entering where she was, said: «Hail, full of grace; the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women.» She, hearing this, was troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her: «Do not fear, Mary, for you have found grace with God: behold, you shall conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He shall be great and shall be called Son of the Most High; and the Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end.» Then Mary said to the angel: «How shall this be, since I know not man?» And the angel, answering, said to her: «The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you. Therefore also the Holy One who shall be born of you shall be called Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; because with God nothing shall be impossible.» Then Mary said: «Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to your word.»

🕊️ The messenger of the incarnation and redemption

Saint Gabriel is the voice of God himself on the threshold of salvation, approaching the Virgin Mary with profound reverence and awe. By greeting her with the "Hail, full of grace", the Archangel recognizes in her the pinnacle of created purity, preserved from every stain of sin. Gabriel does not limit himself to transmitting a message, but acts as a true heavenly ambassador who proposes the ineffable mystery of the nuptials between the Creator and humanity, awaiting the "fiat" that would seal our redemption. According to Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, in his famous "Homily on the Mission of the Angel Gabriel" (Homily Missus Est), the entire heavenly court and past generations held their breath in expectation of that response, demonstrating that the magnitude of the mystery of the Incarnation was entrusted by God to Marian purity and mediated by the strength of this glorious Archangel.

The grand redemptive design that Gabriel announces in Nazareth had already been meticulously prepared throughout the centuries, and revealed by him himself to the prophet Daniel. The prophecy of the seventy weeks is not limited to a mere temporal calculation, but is the proof and absolute certainty that God hears the fervent prayers of his faithful and governs the threads of history to extinguish transgression, bringing eternal justice. The angel manifests himself to the prophet exactly at the moment of the "evening sacrifice", prophetically pointing to the supreme sacrifice of the Cross, where Christ would be killed for the remission of our sins. As Saint Jerome warns in his "Commentaries on the Book of Daniel", the time revealed by the Archangel consoled the exiled humanity, guaranteeing that the divine promises of restoration would never be frustrated, even amid successive earthly tribulations.

In this way, the mission of Saint Gabriel perfectly unifies the cry of hope from the Old Testament and its glorious and definitive fulfillment in the New, drawing a salvific line from the prophetic vision of Daniel to the most pure bosom of the Virgin of Nazareth. The same Archangel who assures the end of iniquity and the advent of forgiveness through the Passion of the Messiah is the one who sings, centuries later, the luminous firstfruits of his divine conception. In these mysteries, we are exhorted to a life of obedient and expectant faith; we are called to be "men of desires" ardent for the realities of heaven, imitating the readiness of the Virgin Mary in the humble and unconditional welcome of the Word, so that the "Fortress of God" (Gabriel) may sustain us in the fulfillment of His will.
